Migration

This series is in it’s infancy and I called it Migration right from the first piece because I am unearthing great journeys with hundreds of little birds. Perhaps second-generation Canadians like myself are still fascinated with stories of the choices, travels and sacrifices made by our parents to come to Canada.

The process of folding hundreds of origami birds is a cathartic, meditative practice. Always striving for perfection, taking joy in the completion of each small task, the culmination of thousands of motions to create something larger than the sum of the parts. I enjoy these pieces from the vantage point of each individual bird, hundreds of individual journeys, all connected in a universal dance.

Migration 01 – Finding Home (2020)

What are the chances, that thousands of miles were crossed by so many so that we could find each other, find home.

I created my first origami artwork, using 1000 folded origami cranes, with the intention of displaying it in my wife’s office. I had temporarily placed it in our living room while organizing its deliver. And each time we passed it, we saw it from a different perspective. We fell in love with it over and over again and decided it should stay right where it was. (More about this piece, press back in browser to return)

While you should fear and respect the storm, it should not prevent you from ever taking off.

Within 6 hours of posting Finding Home, I received a commission inquiry from an Edmonton Art Collector, resulting in this massive 6′ x 7′ custom piece made of hand-folded swallows. (More about this piece, press back in browser to return)

What draws them in?  To come together, to find each other.

My newest piece, unveiled for the first time during this virtual show. Inspired by the desire for people to come together, perhaps now more than ever.
