Strong Woman

This sculpture series celebrates women’s pursuit of physical strength in a move away from traditional views on femininity.  The subjects are my CrossFit coaches, who train to test their physical limits, and nurture a growing community who crave this empowerment.  This physical revolution in women comes decades after the socio-economic one, but do age-old biases still linger?

The aesthetic is purposefully stark with an oxidized iron. Iron was chosen as it is dug from the earth, refined to great strength and beauty through an arduous process, yet it is vulnerable to time and nature.

The heavy weight has been lifted.  Only through years of training has she built sufficient strength.

Even so, it requires and explosive, coordinated motion to raise it overhead.

But the movement is not complete; she still needs to stand up. She will rise, she will conquer; the world and herself.
